From Chris Chipak:

The Right to Skate team and I worked to create a board that would promote truth and reconciliation.

After some discussions and idea sharing, we agreed to make something powerful and meaningful to all who seek truth and reconciliation.

To me, Reconciliation means healing and working with everyone to heal and support one another for a better future.

With inspiration from Simone McLeod’s work where people lean on one another for support, I wanted to weave that idea into the 7 generations of healing. From each drawn person, left to right:
A child who was a innocent residential school survivor,
A survivor as an adult looking for acceptance/needing support,
A woman who looked for guidance to reconnect to culture.
The elderly kohkum(grandma), the ones who keep us all connected , the elderly, who store our traditions and keep us rooted.
Next is a woman, who is starting to be given the support but struggled with uncovering the truth.
A child, who represents the youth being taught of Canadas true history in the present and wearing a braid proudly with an orange tshirt.
The child holds onto the hope of a better future.
The future person, looks forward and reflects on what we have overcome.
The future is hopeful of being at peace with the past and to be reconciled toward keeping our cultures continuing.

Lastly, the butterfly represents hope and longevity. It is on either side of the skateboard and is weaved within the Kohkum in the center to symbolize longevity, hope, a new beginning, guidance and emergence.

The Colours that I connect to reconciliation are purple for hope, blues for sadness/ pain. The red for mmiwg2s+ and orange for the truth and reconciliation of Canada.
